What is Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 THC is an isomer of Delta-9 THC—same atoms, slightly different arrangement. The double bond is on the 8th carbon instead of the 9th, which changes how it binds to receptors. The result is effects similar to Delta-9 but milder and reportedly clearer. Delta-8 occurs naturally in cannabis in trace amounts, but commercial Delta-8 products are typically synthesized from CBD derived from hemp. This synthesis process has created a legal gray area: Delta-8 is technically derived from legal hemp but produces psychoactive effects.
How It Works
Delta-8 binds to CB1 receptors like Delta-9, but with lower affinity due to the different position of the double bond. This lower binding affinity is thought to explain its milder psychoactive effects. It also binds to CB2 receptors.
