What is CBN?

Cannabinol (CBN) has an unusual origin story: it forms when THC oxidizes and degrades over time. That old, dry cannabis that's lost its punch? It's likely high in CBN. This degradation product is mildly psychoactive—about 10% as potent as THC—but its claim to fame is sedation. While research is limited, CBN has become synonymous with sleep products. The sedative reputation may be partly due to the entourage effect when combined with THC's other breakdown products, but users consistently report that CBN helps with sleep.

How It Works

CBN binds to CB1 receptors with about 10% the affinity of THC, explaining its mild psychoactivity. Its sedative effects may come from this CB1 binding combined with possible interactions with other receptor systems. CBN also shows activity at CB2 receptors and may affect TRPV2 channels.
